Although I personally don’t have any major experiences with hoaxes or scams, I want to briefly share a story about a friend of mine. The older generations tend to have a bit of difficulty knowing what is real and fake on the internet. Over the course of my friend’s marriage, she had been conversing with a man on the internet. He promised her a life of luxury in his country in exchange for money for the cost of living. After all was said and done, she ended up sending this man three million dollars and threw her family into incredible amounts of debt. This man scammed her for money and got away with no repercussions for his actions. If somebody randomly reaches out to you on the internet, odds are, it’s a scam. If it seems too good to be true, then it probably is. Nobody on the internet is generous enough to give you the life of your dreams after seeing your Facebook profile. Remember that.
